Untamed Elegance

BY GUIDO, REDKEN GLOBAL STYLING DIRECTOR

As the Spring/Summer 2012 Runways proved, opposites can attract. Models walked the runways with hairstyles ranging from highly sculpted updos to tousled, fresh-from-the-shower looks that only seemed effortless. To create hairstyles for in-demand designers including Jil Sander, Valentino and Alexander Wang, Guido looked to inspirations ranging from Hitchcock heroines to modern-day New York City women. For Redken’s Untamed Elegance Collection, he chose five stunning styles that beautifully reflected the contrasting ideals of the season.

A SLEEK FAUX BOB WITH A MINIMALISTIC AESTHETIC

The fashion designer Jil Sander is known for minimal shapes with clean lines. For this look, inspired by the runway show, Guido sculpted hair into a faux bob with high shine and a linear shape. "It’s classic kind of late 50s/early 60s American hairdo – sort of a Hitchcock idea of beauty," he explains. "I achieved it by rolling the hair up from underneath and creating a bob-length hairstyle with a couture shape. In one way it feels retro, and in another way it’s very modern."

Crowning Glory

A SCULPTED UPDO WITH COUTURE APPEAL

Inspired by the look seen at Jean Paul Gaultier, this gleaming updo proves that couture craftsmanship isn’t limited to just clothing. "This hairstyle has whimsy and joie de vivre, but at the same time it’s quite dramatic," says Guido. The rich red hue also helps emphasize the beauty and drama of the sculpted shape. "Color is always important to me when I’m cutting and designing a style," adds Guido.

Tousled Twist

A FEMININE FRENCH TWIST WITH CASUAL GLAM

Seen at Dolce and Gabbana – and inspired by screen siren Sophia Loren – this tousled French twist merges elegance with ease. "It’s a very feminine style, and certainly one that any woman would love to try," says Guido. "It has softness and glamour – almost as if a woman had flung her hair up into a French twist herself." What makes it different from French twists of the past? Volume on the sides and the top. "That’s what gives it that feminine charm," explains Guido.

A ROMANTIC BRAID WITH SOFTNESS AND SHINE

If there’s one lesson to be learned from the past few seasons, it’s that braids are here to stay. This stunning look, inspired by the hairstyle seen at Valentino, promises to be Spring/Summer 2012’s signature braid. "It’s a 70s idea of Victorian, so it’s very feminine and romantic," says Guido. "You can adapt it to suit any woman’s face, and if it looks like it’s falling out a little, all the better."

A NEW TAKE ON THE CLASSIC WET LOOK

Usually, wet looks take the form of slicked-back styles – but this season, Guido reinvented this classic look. Inspired by the just-out-of-the-shower hairstyles seen at Alexander Wang, this long, loose style is the perfect mix of sporty meets glam. "It has a nonchalance, like a woman’s just gotten out of the shower and she’s put on these amazing clothes," says Guido. Key to the look: A professional haircut. "If you have a great shape, you can afford to let your hair be more natural," adds Guido.
